Fountain of Valdecorchos
Sometimes, names can be deceiving. Although the whole town knows it as the “Fountain of Valdecorchos”, geography tells us otherwise: the real Valdecorchos stream flows through another channel. We are, in fact, looking at the historic Fountain of the Hares.
Located in the area known as Loma de las Liebres (Hill of the Hares), this fountain is not a simple rural ornament. For centuries, it was a vital stop on the transhumance routes. Imagine the sound of cowbells and the dust of the road; here, the flocks and beasts of burden that sustained the economy of yesteryear quenched their thirst, turning this watering hole into a strategic point of livestock connection.
However, progress sometimes takes its toll. The construction of modern infrastructure, such as the railway and the road, altered the environment and, unfortunately, cut the water veins that fed it, drastically reducing its flow. Today, the fountain struggles to maintain its dignity.
A few years ago, a restoration effort was made to rescue it from oblivion and improve its access, but the pressure from nearby communication routes has once again complicated its visit, currently being limited by road safety fences. Even so, it is still there, like a stone witness reminding us of the importance of water before the asphalt arrived.
