The Great “Marranada”
Coexistence, traditional roast, and party in the Parque de las Cespedillas
The month of May in Villafranca cannot be understood without its great popular gatherings. As a prelude to the Romería, the weekend before May 15th, La Gran Marranada is celebrated. This Coexistence Festival, organized by the Brotherhood of San Isidro Labrador, is one of the most anticipated gastronomic and festive events for neighbors and visitors.
From early in the morning, the fire begins to be prepared for the roasting of a large pig (marrano). It is a slow, traditional, and spectacular process that lasts all day, becoming the center of all eyes.
Eat, drink, and dance
The party lasts from the morning until well into the night. In addition to the free distribution of the roast meat, attendees can enjoy a tasting of fried chorizo and other typical dishes. The atmosphere is filled with music with performances by rociero choirs, creating the perfect atmosphere for what is to come in the romería.
Miss Romería
One of the most exciting moments of the day is the election of Miss Romería and her maids of honor. An event that, together with the neighborhood coexistence, marks the official start of the countdown to the big day of San Isidro.
