Villafranca de Córdoba offers three clearly defined geographical areas for hiking: the mountains, the fertile plain, and the countryside. Each of these areas provides a different level of challenge and enjoyment for this outdoor activity.
The mountains offer numerous trails winding between shaded slopes and sunny ridges. Walking through the Fuente Agria Peri-Urban Park or La Sierrezuela, and visiting the birdwatching viewpoint, is a must for any hiker.
The fertile plain and the countryside offer easy, linear routes that are especially pleasant in autumn, winter, and spring. A highly recommended route is the Vereda Pecuaria de la Higueruela, which takes you to the neighboring village of El Carpio through olive groves and wide open countryside.
A heritage trail designed by the Town Hall takes visitors through the main architectural landmarks that shape the municipality’s identity today. This route includes buildings from the 16th to the 18th centuries.. Examples include the Municipal Library building, once the town’s butcher shop; the Arco del Pósito, a beautiful masonry structure; the Parish Church of Santa Marina de Aguas Santas, well preserved alongside the old Clock Tower; and the Hermitage of Jesús Nazareno, home to one of the municipality’s most treasured images—Jesús Nazareno—surrounded by a unique altarpiece decorated with colorful feather motifs, quite different from the traditional gold leaf.
From more recent times, Villafranca de Córdoba also preserves landmarks such as the Puente de los Remedios, which, with its 90 years of history, welcomes visitors to the town and bids them farewell after their stay. The Hermitage of Our Lady of Sorrows (Ermita de las Angustias) and the Hermitage of Our Lady of Los Remedios are also must-see sites.
In the mountains, visitors can also find traces of a more recent past—the Spanish Civil War—with preserved trenches and machine-gun nests from the conflict.
