Romería de San Isidro Labrador

Faith, countryside, and party on Villafranca’s big day

After the intense night of the Gran Huevada, Villafranca de Córdoba wakes up on May 15th ready to live its big day. The devotion to San Isidro Labrador, patron saint of farmers, has been celebrated for centuries, but it is since 1969 when the festival took its current character, becoming one of the most participated pilgrimages in the region.

The day begins with a solemn mass in the parish church, where the image of the Saint waits to begin its journey. It is the starting point of a morning full of color, music, and popular fervor.

The Road to La Huertezuela

A long procession of pilgrims on foot, horseback riders and, above all, spectacularly decorated floats with paper flowers and typical motifs, accompanies the image of San Isidro. The journey from the town to the “La Huertezuela” estate is a moving party, where sevillanas, rumbas, and the atmosphere of brotherhood are never lacking.

Upon arriving at the estate, the emotional act of the blessing of the fields takes place, praying for the year’s harvests. From there, La Huertezuela becomes a great country celebration. Families and groups of friends share food and drink in a massive “picnic” that lasts until dusk, when the Saint returns to the town.

Living Tradition

The Brotherhood of San Isidro Labrador, founded in 1998, is the engine that keeps this tradition alive, organizing both the Romería and the previous events of the Gran Marranada and the Huevada, ensuring that popular fervor passes from generation to generation.
