Stellar Observatory
When the sun goes down, Villafranca turns on the stars. Next to the river’s bird observatory, there is a space where the sky becomes the true protagonist.
This Stellar Observatory is not a closed building with giant telescopes, but an “open classroom” to the universe. Built in 2020 as part of a commitment to sustainable tourism, its design is intended for the observer’s comfort. It features a paved platform, strategically placed benches, and informative panels that help decipher the maps of the firmament. But the most important thing is what you don’t see: dim and adapted lighting, specifically designed not to interfere with the darkness necessary for astronomy.
The location is not accidental. Villafranca enjoys exceptionally clean night skies, far from the light pollution of large cities. This has earned it recognition within the Starlight network.
What does it mean to be a Starlight Territory?
This certification is not just a diploma; it is a commitment to conservation. It certifies that Villafranca’s sky has excellent quality and that the municipality strives to protect it. Here science meets tourism: it is a place where natural heritage is not only on the ground, but also above our heads. It is an invitation to stop, look up, and reconnect with the immensity of the cosmos.
