La Candelaria
Purifying fire, gastronomy, and tradition on the warmest night of winter
When night falls on January 31st, Villafranca de Córdoba is transformed. The winter cold of the Guadalquivir riverbank is fought by one of the oldest and most beloved traditions of the town: La Candelaria. It is not just a festival; it is a rite of purification and coexistence where fire is the absolute protagonist.
The streets, squares, and corners of the neighborhoods light up with numerous bonfires. Neighbors and families gather around the flames, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere that invites visitors to stop, warm their hands, and share stories. It is the essence of Villafranca hospitality in its purest form.
Flavors of the Bonfire
La Candelaria cannot be understood without its gastronomy. The smoke from the bonfires mixes with the unmistakable aroma of the embers where humble but delicious delicacies are prepared: roasted sardines, the traditional ajo arriero, and comforting migas. Traditional dishes that taste better when shared on the street.
Tradition and Devotion
Beyond the fire and the popular festival, La Candelaria in Villafranca holds a moment of special emotion in the Hermitage of the Virgin of Los Remedios. Following an old custom, it is a tradition to present the children baptized during the last year to the Patron Saint.
This act symbolizes the Virgin’s protection over the new inhabitants of Villafranca and connects the new generations with the spiritual roots of the town. A perfect mix between the sacred and the profane, between the solemnity of the temple and the joy of the bonfires in the street.
