What to see and visit in Villafranca de Córdoba

Plaza de la Charquilla (La Charquilla Square)

The Plaza de la Charquilla is one of the most historic corners of Villafranca de Córdoba. Located in the northeast of the town center, this square also gives its name to the surrounding neighborhood.

Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, when it was part of the village of La Parrilla. Before the granting of the Carta Puebla, which unified the various villages into what is now Villafranca, this area was probably the Muslim quarter known as La Axarquía. Over time, the name evolved phonetically into La Charquilla.

Over the years, the square has undergone various transformations. Its central fountain, a distinctive feature of the place, was damaged during cleaning work but remains a symbol of the neighborhood.
Today, Plaza de la Charquilla is a space that blends history and daily life, serving as a meeting point for both locals and visitors.
